Sadly last night I saw a BBC news report that one of the rescued divers from Wemyss Bay had died as a result of the 'bends'.

Having watched the rescue services yesterday their speed, efficiency and effectiveness was outstanding.
To the divers family and friends - I am so sorry.
Oh no, that's dreadful, Celia. I spent some time in Northumberland once and knew several divers who suffered minor effects of the bends and had constant pain in their joints as a result - worse on land that under the water. It's caused by gas bubbles being released into the blood stream - made worse if decompression procedures aren't followed but it does happen anyway to some extent. It's quite unusual for divers to suffer death as a result nowadays because so much is known about it but such a shame for the diver, his family - and also you for witnessing it. Axx
